A study of 11 healthcare systems, judged on quality, efficiency, cost and performance, found that the NHS came top because of the quality of its care, its efficiency and its low cost. The countries studied were: Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the US. The US came bottom. The study was carried out by The Commonwealth Fund, a private US-based foundation with the aim of promoting high quality health care. Data used included international statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
